Flay was born Karisia Frances Flay in Hempstead, New York, to Lynne and Christopher Flay, both of whom were songwriters and musicians. She is of French and German descent. In her youth, she went by the name Karisia or Kari before adopting her current name as a teenager.

In 1999, she married singer Adam Levine of the pop rock band Maroon 5. In 2004, K. Flay signed with Interscope Records and released her first solo album, "K.O.D.", which peaked at number 48 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and produced four singles: "I Will Remember You", "I'm Not Over You", "Caught in a Lie" and "Break It Down".

Her second album "Fearless" was released on September 11, 2006 to critical acclaim but relatively little commercial success, peaking at number 45 on the US Albums Chart and spawning two successful singles: "Fly Away" and "I Can't Stop". In 2008, she released her third studio album "The Way I Am", which included songs from both previous albums as well as new material including a cover version of The Beatles' Yesterday song with a special guest appearance from James Toto. The lead single off the album was "Ghost".

The Way I Am sold approximately 20,000 copies in its first week of release – disappointing sales compared with her previous albums – but it eventually became her most successful album to date, reaching number 3 on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart and selling over 82,000 copies in its first week of release; it eventually sold over 400,000 copies in the United States alone (according to Nielsen SoundScan). A fourth album was recorded after that but was never released due to legal disputes with Interscope Records; K. Flay's record label wanted her to focus on other projects (having finished up on tour) while K.

Flay wanted to release the album for promotional purposes only before she started work on her fifth studio album (which would be released after several years). She also wrote two songs for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 soundtrack called "Love Don't Die" and lead single from the soundtrack called "It Won't Be Soon Before Long".
